Understanding the Different Roles in CSGO

CS:GO – Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, is a first-person shooter game (fps), found by those starting out to be pretty complicated. To be successful, you need a lot more than sharp reflexes and excellent shooting skills. There are numerous weapons and tools in CSGO that you will need to master in order to compete at a decent level. However, this is a team game and because of this, you won’t need to do everything on your own. Most good CSGO teams will have their players take on a variety of roles that make the most of their specific skill sets.

Within the game of CSGO, roles are incredibly important because, in order to be successful, every player should have their own specific position as the game is being played. It is also very useful for CSGO gambling fans to know about the importance of each role, and how each team structures them.

The Five Roles in CSGO

In the game, there are generally five different roles in a CSGO team. These are the:

  • Entry Fragger
  • Support
  • In-game leader
  • Lurker
  • AWPer

By having these roles, each CSGO player will be more able to focus on one specific area of the game so that they can help their team in winning the round in the most efficient way. It is important to note, however, that these roles are not set in stone. The game requires a team to adapt and evolve and often, players will need to switch roles based on what situation they and their team are in. So, let’s take a quick look at the five different roles, what they require and how to excel in the role. Aside from having the best equipment possible, here’s how to make the most of your CSGO team position…

Entry Fragger

In Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, the entry fragger will be the first player into the bombsite or objective when on the attack. The role of the entry fragger is to initiate the push onto a site. They might do this either by managing to get an entry kill or by simply offering adequate support to the rest of the team to make a decent play. An entry fragger will need to make sure the spots are clear where enemies may be sitting and to call out any information on the positions of the enemy team.

To be a good entry fragger, you will need to have a solid aim and a quick reaction time. This is one of the more high-risk positions in the game and there is a higher chance of dying in this role. Generally, the attacking players have a disadvantage when pushing sites, so as an entry fragger you need to be able to quickly adapt to a situation.

If the entry fragger manages at least one pick when they are pushing a site, then this would be considered a success and they would have helped their team. The player that takes this role will usually be near the bottom of their leaderboard but the role is one of the most vital in the team – and winning the match as a team is more important than the player’s individual statistics.

One of the best entry fraggers in the professional game is Nikola ‘NiKo’ Kovac who plays for the FaZe clan. He excels at manoeuvres such as pushing through smoke and securing picks. He is known for fast and aggressive gameplay, which is exactly what is expected from any good entry fragger. His role is made even more successful if he has teammates there to help him – especially those in the ‘support’ role, which we look at next…

Support

The entry fragger’s best friend, really, is the support player. This person will push with the entry fragger and help to provide cover by effectively using utility. A support player will be the one to trade kills should the entry fragger get killed and will then cover other lines of sight. The player also provides support by effectively using utility to help the push or assist the entry fragger.

Good use of grenades will be an important part of pushing onto a bomb site. The support players will regularly use a flash grenade to blind the opposition before they push forward. The player might also use smokes to hide their team’s advancement or else to cover certain viewpoints. By doing this as a support player, it allows the entry fragger to focus on getting to the site and opening up the way for the rest of the team.

To be a good support player, you must be familiar with all the different utility items and understand the different trajectories of the different grenades. All of the maps have numerous spots that a player can use to throw grenades onto specific spots on the map. The best support players will have most of these areas memorised as it will make them more effective. Strong teamwork and a sharp awareness of the game is vital for a support player to excel in that position. The use of utility within a team can make or break their overall performance.

The CSGO In-Game Leader Roles

All teams in CSGO will need someone to take the lead and call the shots to keep them working together and functioning cohesively. This is the role of the in-game leader. Their job is to keep the whole team singing from the same song-sheet by organising the flow of their gameplay. The in-game leader should be good at everything really as they should be able to effectively fill almost any other role in the game – including support and entry fragger. The in-game leader role is considered to be one of the most important components of any team.

An in-game leader will need to choose the items to buy for every round. They decide when to rotate, when they should push a site – and basically be responsible for all the important decisions. As such, the player will need to be able to adjust to any changing situations or scenario – adaptability is key.

To be an in-game leader, you need to possess strong leadership qualities. You must also have a strong game awareness in order to help lead your team to victory. It is also vital to have the ability to bounce back from more difficult and less successful rounds and to keep up the team morale!

Lurker

A lurker is the player who focuses mainly on using stealth and skill to outmanoeuvre the opposition team. The lurker players are always looking to surprise the opposition and get those easy kills on players that are on their own. A lurker usually sits on the opposite bombsite that their team is executing, eliminating the rotating players. Lurkers are usually players that can quickly rotate between the sites as necessary when on the Counter-Terrorist side.

The player that takes this role must have an excellent knowledge of the map and understand when the best time is to reveal themselves. They must also have trigger discipline as sometimes you may need to let one enemy go in order to successfully ambush the whole team.

One of the best Counter-Strike: Global Offensive lurkers in the world is Oleksandr ‘S1mple’ Kostyliev. He is well renowned for his impressive trigger discipline, which will allow him to see where all of his enemies are and use forward thinking to full effect. His ability to outmanoeuvre the enemy and his quick thinking skills are something that should be observed and replicated by anyone looking to be a successful lurker.

AWPer

All good teams will designate one player to be the AWPer. This CSGO player in this role should be able to effectively use these expensive weapons in order to hold long angles and hit important kills. Often, a team will build its economy around providing the AWPer with an AWP because these don’t come cheap.

An AWPer will need to be skilled with this powerful weapon or it will be a complete waste of money. This player should also be able to effectively use rifles as well, because there will be times when an AWP isn’t available.

In good hands, an AWP can dramatically change the way the game is going. One of the top professional AWPers in CS GO across the globe is Kenny ‘kennyS’ Schrub who will always provide the perfect examples of how to effectively use the weapon. Players looking to take on this role should check out his videos to see how it’s done.

CSGO Secondary Roles

Often, CSGO players don’t always just stick to one specific role as they will need to adapt to specific rounds depending on what’s happening. There are plenty of teams that will have a second AWPer, for example, who can also handle an AWP well if necessary. The use of two AWPers is sometimes used on particular maps if the team’s economy can support it.

As mentioned above, the in-game leader will often take on another role in the team whilst continuing to call strategies and fulfil their other duties. Any player who hasn’t been designated as an AWPer will technically be ‘Riflers’, because their main weapon will be a rifle, not AWPs.

Most good CS:GO players will also be able to fill the support role as and when needed because the ability to use utility effectively and having a good understanding of when to use them is something any decent player should have.

CSGO Roles Should Be Fluid

No matter what level you are playing at, CSGO players won’t always stick to just the one position. They should be able to fill whatever role needs to be filled within their team. Each player should have a decent knowledge of using utility effectively. Players should also be able to skilfully use AWps or rifles when needed. Generally, players find themselves gravitating to the role that best suits their skills and the roles in which they are the most effective. Any good in-game leader will be able to recognise their team’s strength and help them to reach their potential by pointing them in the right direction.

Roles aren’t always clear cut and obvious – and may well be combined depending on how the match is going and being played. However, by having a good understanding of the different roles and what each one involves, it can help players to see what might be missing on their team and allow them to make adjustments accordingly.

The best teams are those that consist of CSGO players who know how to correctly and efficiently take on roles. So, when practising, learn your strengths and weaknesses and this will help you find the role best suited for you.
