The official description of the Butterfly Knife given by CSGO is as follows: The Butterfly Knife is a cosmetic knife made available to players of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. It is both a rare and special item. The weapon was initially introduced back in July 2014 as part of the Operation Breakout update.

It was the very first rare special item that became exclusive to its container – the Operation Breakout Weapon Case, which is available in the Arms Deal finishes. On 15th March 2017, the weapon became available in a Chroma finish in the Spectrum Case. On 14th September 2017, it returned in the Spectrum 2 case. Finally, way later on the 21st of September 2021 in Operation Riptide, as a part of the Operation Riptide Case, it was made available in Gamma,

Here are some very interesting facts and bits of trivia you should know about the CSGO Butterfly Knife:

It appears that the Butterfly Knife was originally based on the Terry Guinn Gargoyle Scimitar Hybrid.
When in the Lore finish, the Butterfly Knife is bugged, giving it a float range anywhere between 0 and 1 as opposed to other Lore knives that range between 0 and 0.85.
There are two different draw animations of the Butterfly Knife which are played at random. The first shows a player flicking the knife open, while the other shows a player spinning it around with an open hand and then gripping it.
This knife has a total of three inspect animations, also played at random. The first shows a player flicking his knife backwards and forwards, then holding the safe handle between his thumb and index finger whilst balancing the bit handle on his other fingers. The second shows a player spinning the knife around on his thumb numerous times before returning it to the same position. The final one shows a player flicking the Butterfly Knife forwards, then spinning it around on his thumb once, returning it to the same position.
The Butterfly Knife is also referred to as the Batangas Knife or the Balisong and originally came from the Philippines. These knives were often used as razors used to shave before the modern, conventional razors made their way to the country.
